The Kills Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My Product conforms to real music videos because of the planning stages, I drew out a storyboard containing the shot length and type of shot, and this made it easier when filming the actual video. I believe it is a good method of planning as it allows you to see how each individual shot will come together. The video itself is very unique as it is very minimalistic and simple; this made it a good video to recreate as it allowed me to focus on my editing skills. I think it challenges conventions of normal media products as it contains and extensive use of fast cuts, these give off the feel of action even though nothing that interesting is happening. I have learnt how to edit music videos since I had no previous experience or knowledge of how to do so. The use of props in my music video conforms with the conventions of real media products because in music videos props, in most cases, have to be used to interest the audience and make it more entertaining. In this case it was a microphone, a guitar and a camera.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I have developed my skills thoroughly since my first video, from the miming video and the final music video. The quality of filming is the most noticeable point, as actually shots were used in a wide variety and much better quality lighting was used. The final outcomes lead to a much more professional outcome of the kills music video compared to the preliminary task. Doing these tasks has opened my eyes to the importance of camera angles and positioning, and that to get a shot to look right it takes preparation and planning. I was also introduced to the 180 degrees rule and this had to be taken into consideration when filming my practice tasks.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I have learned that my editing of the final video was good but as a class we could have filmed the shots a bit better, perhaps using a more suitable location for the shots, as this would have given it a more realistic feel. I am happy with the response and the final outcome as the task was something new to me so I found it challenging, but gladly i received positive feedback. I have also learned to give myself more time to carry out the editing process, as I underestimated how much work it takes to fit every shot in place, this meant me rushing in the last few days to complete it, so in my future video I will leave a longer period of time so I can successfully complete the editing to a high standard.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
